Kelly Hernandez takes over Niceville girl’s soccer

NICEVILLE — To say that soccer runs through Kelly Fernandez’s veins is an understatement.

She embodies soccer.

Now, the Niceville alumna will take over the Niceville girls soccer program after a stellar 19-year run helmed by Michael Denton.

Kelly Fernandez, far right, will helm the Niceville girls soccer program.

“The world goes round,” Fernandez said. “It’s where I started coaching and where I wanted to end up coaching. I’m extremely excited. Honored I think is the best word.”

Fernandez’s coaching path started in 1990 — only a year removed from high school graduation — under Danny Blaine. The two were part of the first girls soccer team at Niceville.

“She’s been involved in the game for many years,” said Grant Thompson, Niceville athletic director and he himself a Niceville alumnus. “The program means a lot to her. It’s a neat thing about our school that we get a lot of alums coming back to the program.”
