Minnesota Valley Lutheran/New Ulm Cathedral’s Clare Fischer finished third in the 3,200-meter run on Saturday at the Section 2A track and field meet at Mankato West. Fischer finished in 11:48 and broke the school record, which was previously 11:53 held by Amanda Dettmann.

MANKATO — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop (GFW) junior Treay Taylor seemed a bit disappointed after finishing second in the 100-meter dash in the Section 2A Track and Field Championships at Mankato West Saturday.

Taylor finished just seventh-hundredths of a second behind Hudson Artz of Fairmont in the 100 meters.

He found redemption in the 4×100 meter relay, anchoring the GFW team to a season-best 45.35 second finishing, passing a couple competitors on the final straightaway.

“I realized I was in third place, a few yards behind the leaders, but an adrenaline surge kicked in and I was able to win it,” Taylor said. “I feel I made up for the 100 meter race. We had good handoffs too. We practiced them all week.”

Taylor and GFW seniors Johnnie and Valdimire Ambrose and Dominic Henrichs won the relay, earning a spot in the state track meet next weekend at St. Michael-Albertville High School.

“You want it? You’ve got to go get it. We’re been grinding hard, training for this,” said Valdimire Ambrose.

Olivia Schwarzrock, a GFW junior, won the discus throw with a final heave of 124 feet, 11 inches, earning a state track meet spot.

“She’s been working very hard all season. She really got her throws down,” said GFW weights coach Bob Vrklan.

Schwarzrock credited good coaching and lots of family support at the meet for helping spur her on.

“I couldn’t have done it without them,” Schwarzrock said.

The River Valley (Sleepy Eye, Springfield, and Cedar Mountain) girls 4×800 relay team of junior Lily McCone and eighth-graders Marissa Pabst, Skyla Dauer, and Emmaline McCone finished first, earning a state meet spot with a season-best 10:19.26.

“We just had to believe we could do it. We told ourselves we could and we did it. We just wanted it,” Lily McCone said.
